Safety Guidelines During a Demonstration or Protest Situation

While most protests are peaceful demonstrations, the unfortunate truth is that some are not. Any public gathering can lead to collective violence (looting, vandalism, etc.), injury and/or arrests if heightened emotions are involved.

For this reason, it’s important that you take the proper steps to protect yourself (and your business) in the off chance that activities escalate during a nearby demonstration or protest. The following is an aid to assist in personal and business safety in these situations.

BE PROACTIVE PLAN AHEAD

The more prepared you are in advance, the better equipped you’ll be to handle an emergency, should it arise.

Proactively put security measures in place to protect businesses against violence, property damage or vandalism that may result from a demonstration or protest. This may include video surveillance, perimeter security or improved lighting.

For businesses, have an emergency plan in place. Keep an updated employee list in case emergency notifications are needed and remind personnel where information would be posted in the chance of office closings or other announcements.

Finally, keep a tab on if demonstrations or protests are scheduled in your area by following local media, police station alerts and social networking sites. When events are known, ensure employees are informed and educated.

STAY SAFE DURING A PROTEST

If a protest or demonstration occurs close to your business, use your best discretion.

  • Keep unnecessary people away from the demonstration.

  • Never proceed into or through demonstrations if faced with resistance.

  • Handle unrest in a non-confrontational manner.

  • If there is violence, property damage or credible threat, contact the police immediately.

  • Monitor access to place of work/site.
